About
This close-in SW neighborhood is unique. Unlike other nearby areas of mid-priced homes, Multnomah emerged long before automobiles dictated every aspect of urban design. Capitol Highway, a meandering lane, dissects the neighborhood. Homes closest to Capitol Highway were built in the early 20th century but around the neighborhood’s edges are pockets of min-century homes. Scattered throughout are newer homes built on in-fill lots.
The community’s heart is its pedestrian-friendly commercial center, theVillage, where one can find a wide variety of ways to fill and/or adorn body, belly, mind and spirit. With one exception, all the neighborhood businesses are locally owned. Some have been around long enough to be institutions: Fat City, Annie Blooms’s Books, O’Connors,The Ship, Renner’s, John’s Market, Marco’s, the yarn store, candy store and the two antique stores. Relative commercial newcomers offer toys, clothes, quilting supplies, wine, Thai food, bento; the list goes on.
