About
Not so long ago, Hillsdale was home to more cows than people but the expanding economy and population in the years after WW II changed that. Growing affluence and the nation’s blossoming love affair with the automobile led to Portland’s southerly urban expansion, over the hill and into the dale. There are older homes in North Burlingame and others scattered along the major roadways, but the vast majority of Hillsdale’s homes were built between 1948 and 1970. Styles dominant are ranches, daylight ranches, split levels and mid-century moderns. The hillside terrain meant many of these homes had views to the south or west. The area’s higher end homes made dynamic use of glass in ways not seen in pre-war homes. (See examples of the range of Hillsdale home styles in the Photo Gallery tab.)
