About
South Burlingame is a hillside neighborhood within 10 minutes of downtown Portland. Most homes in the area were built between 1938 and 1970. The older ones are tend to be on the western side of the neighborhood and the newer ones on the east. The area has easy access to 2000+ acres of publicly accessible green space. The obvious retreat is Tryon Creek Park’s 670 forested acres. Less obvious is the beautiful Lewis & Clark College Campus with its graceful vestiges of a former existence as a private estate. Other opportunities for respite (temporary) for the polite and respectful among us are the area’s five cemeteries. Riverview Cemetery, founded in 1882, is the largest and the one with longtime permanent occupants whose names are familiar today: Corbett, Ladd, Failing, Benson, Terwilliger, Weinhard, Duniway, Pittock, Couch and baseball legend Willie Mays.
A small commercial center sits at the center of the neighborhood. Businesses include: The Market of Choice, a boutique grocery store; Che Jose, a popular Mexican restaurant; Bella’s Garage; a locally owned coffee & wine house; the Tryon Creek Bar and Grill, a sports bar and Starbucks.
